The Natya Mārga School of Dance was founded by Dr. Madhavi Menon, a South Florida based Bharatanatyam dancer, with an aim to inculcate a love for the classical Indian dance form, Bharatanatyam, while striving for the technical finesse, precision, and grace that are synonymous with it. Students are trained in the Thanjavoor style of Bharatanatyam, with an emphasis on the theory and practice of dance. Madhavi also strives to familiarize her students with India's rich cultural heritage that includes the ancient Indian epics, legends, and mythologies, that are an integral part of the Indian classical dance experience.
The Natya Mārga dance studio is located in Davie, Florida.
What is Bharatanatyam?
The word Bharatanatyam is a simple derivation from the four most important aspects of dance which are Bha from Bhava meaning expression, Ra from Raaga meaning music or melody, Ta from Taala meaning rhythm, and Natyam meaning dance.
Bharatanatyam originated in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is believed that Bharatanatyam has evolved from the temple dance tradition of Dasiattam (the dance of a maiden dedicated to the worship and service of the deity) that was in existence approximately 2000 years ago.
Bharatanatyam is characterized by the geometric patterns formed by the limbs, without any pronounced movement of the upper body, that form linear spatial patterns, which make the dance form extremely dynamic and powerful.
