Dance Classes at Natya Mārga:
Bharatanatyam classes are offered to adults and children (over the age of 5) at the Natya Mārga studio in Davie, FL, at the beginner (adavu), intermediate (Alarippu, Jatiswaram), and advanced (Varnam & onwards) levels. Natya Mārga classes are scheduled for Sunday afternoon/evening and last an hour.
In accordance with tradition, each class begins with the Bhoomi Namaskar, followed by the recitation of select Sanskrit verses that are germane to Indian classical dance. Students then perform warm up exercises which include stretching and yoga postures, before they begin their Bharatanatyam practice.
Students at Natya Mārga are also taught the basics of Carnatic music as it pertains to Bharatanatyam, with special emphasis given to the taala or rhythmic combinations. Students in the intermediate and advanced levels are also trained in jathi recitation to the rhythmic meter while maintaining the taala beats by hand.
Batch sizes are kept small to ensure that each student receives individual attention, thus making every student's journey in this classical dance form unique and distinctive.
Madhavi's Teaching Philosophy at Natya Mārga.
Along with dance and choreography, I care deeply about teaching. I am a teacher in my day job (as a professor at Nova Southeastern University). In fact, for as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to be the kind of teacher who makes learning exciting, who understands her students and their lives, and who creates innovative learning environments.
I believe that learning involves constructing individual meanings about the world, as we interpret our experiences in particular situations. Therefore I believe that my primary task as a teacher is to facilitate connections between abstract conceptual learning, and practical, authentic, and meaningful experience. I endeavor to achieve this by helping students draw parallels with what we are doing in our dance lesson with something that they may have experienced outside the dance studio. For instance, while learning the hasta mudras or hand gestures, we often pick a particular mudra, and explore its traditional and contemporary usage, thereby making an age old mudra relevant to today's students.
Additionally, I strive to be approachable, warm, and caring towards my students. I maintain a positive rapport because I genuinely enjoy the relationship I have with my students and believe that my own energy and excitement can have an effect on the attitudes of my students. First and foremost, I want the students at Natya Mārga to develop an appreciation and love for Bharatanatyam, and then tap on that to hone their dance skills towards technical accuracy and precision.
Teaching is indeed my true love, and there is no greater privilege than being able to teach others about my two greatest passions, psychology (at NSU) and dance at Natya Mārga. I look forward to having you join me in our discovery of the path of dance at the Natya Mārga School of Dance...
